A 70-year-old man has been imprisoned for four weeks following a shooting incident near the town hall in Sorø two weeks ago. The decision was made at a preliminary hearing at the Court in Næstved on Wednesday.
The man, who had been hospitalized for his injuries sustained during the shooting, was brought before the court after recovering sufficiently. He faces charges related to setting fire to gas cylinders at a dental clinic and throwing Molotov cocktails at the town hall.
According to the indictment, the man allegedly set fire to 12 gas cylinders at the entrance to a dental clinic in Sorø. He is also accused of throwing two Molotov cocktails at the entrance to the town hall.
Furthermore, the indictment states that he drove after two officers on his moped and threatened them with a pistol-like object before being shot in the leg. He is charged under section 180(3) of the Penal Code, which applies when there are “particularly aggravating circumstances”.
During the preliminary hearing, the man admitted to having brought Molotov cocktails but denied throwing them at the town hall. He also stated that he wanted to be shot by the police. His defense attorney had previously stated that his client pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The judge in the case has requested a medical assessment to determine if the man is suitable for imprisonment in an ordinary prison. The Independent Police Complaints Authority is investigating the police’s use of firearms during the incident.
The initial presentation of the charges occurred on May 15 in absentia due to the man’s hospitalization. No one else was injured in the incident, which police have described as an “isolated incident”.
