A 48-year-old man has denied guilt in connection to accusations of attempting to run over police officers with his car in Asnæs. The incident occurred Saturday evening and resulted in the man being shot in the collarbone by police. He made the denial during a preliminary hearing held in Roskilde Court on Sunday afternoon, which led to the judge ordering his detention in absentia until August 14.
The man is facing three counts of attempting to subject officers to gross violence by trying to run them over with his vehicle. Following the second alleged attempt to hit the officers, one officer discharged their firearm, firing two shots at the man, with one bullet striking his collarbone.
According to the man’s account, he was initially struck by the officers, prompting him to attempt to flee in his car. He managed to evade the initial patrol car, but another quickly approached him. He claims he drove into a field, where his car became stuck before he managed to reverse it out.
The indictment alleges that he then backed the car towards an officer who had exited the patrol car. The officer stated that they had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by the vehicle, after which they drew their service weapon and fired two shots.
Police were initially dispatched to the man’s location following a report that he was suicidal. The prosecutor read a statement in the preliminary hearing from the officer who shot the man on Saturday, indicating that the officer felt threatened and feared for their life before discharging the weapon. The accused stated in court that he respects the police but wanted to leave quickly when one of the first officers he encountered on Saturday evening drew their baton.
