A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including negligent manslaughter, in connection with a car crash that resulted in the death of an 87-year-old woman. The incident occurred in Gudme, Funen, last November.
The defendant admitted to driving too fast and misjudging a turn, leading to a head-on collision with the victim’s vehicle. He stated that if her car had not been present at that precise moment, the accident would not have happened.
The charges also include drunk driving and driving without a valid license. Furthermore, he violated a medical driving ban due to his epilepsy.
The accident took place on the evening of November 8 when the defendant lost control of his car while navigating a right turn. The vehicle skidded and collided with the woman’s car, which was traveling in the opposite direction.
He admitted to consuming at least five beers earlier in the evening with friends and also drinking in the car while driving. He knew he was not allowed to drive due to a medical ban resulting from previous epileptic seizures.
In court, he stated that one of his friends challenged the car’s capabilities, prompting him to accelerate down a hill to demonstrate its power. He admitted to braking too late and failing to slow down sufficiently before entering the turn.
He explained that the car had extensive mileage and that the brakes were not in optimal condition, despite being assessed as adequate.
Although he usually experiences warning signs before a seizure and would pull over, he claimed to be conscious during the accident.
