A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including negligent manslaughter and drunk driving, following a fatal head-on collision in Gudme, Funen, last November. The incident resulted in the death of an 87-year-old woman. The plea was entered on Monday in the Court in Svendborg.
The man also admitted to driving without a license and violating a medical driving ban related to his epilepsy. The collision occurred on the evening of November 8 when he lost control of his car while navigating a right turn.
The vehicle skidded into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the victim’s car. According to the defendant, he had been drinking beer with friends earlier in the evening. They were en route to park the car before attending a birthday party when the accident occurred.
The defendant acknowledged misjudging the sharpness of the turn, despite being familiar with the road. He admitted to driving too fast. He stated that he lost consciousness immediately before the crash and regained awareness only when being extracted from the vehicle, feeling confused about the situation.
He further explained that prior to the accident, one of his friends had questioned the car’s capabilities, prompting him to accelerate down a hill to demonstrate its performance. He admitted to accelerating and braking too late, failing to reduce speed sufficiently before entering the turn.
Court proceedings revealed that the defendant had consumed at least five beers before the accident. He also admitted to drinking alcohol in the car while driving.
