Andrei Matushkin, the president of the non-profit “International Association of Detectives,” has been arrested and charged with treason in St. Petersburg. He has been in custody since September and has pleaded guilty to the charges.
The investigation alleges that Matushkin was transferring state secrets abroad and collaborating with foreign intelligence services, specifically maintaining contact with representatives from Baltic countries.
The Kolpinsky District Court of St. Petersburg ordered Matushkin’s detention on September 4.
The “International Association of Detectives,” registered in 2012 and claiming foundation in 2009, describes itself as the largest Russian-speaking community of private investigators. The association aims to support detectives, protect their rights, and foster relationships with various organizations, both domestic and international.
In addition to his role in the detective association, Matushkin is also known as the chairman of the regional public organization “St. George’s Union,” which focuses on preserving Russian historical heritage and promoting military traditions.
Notably, Matushkin was declared bankrupt in 2021 due to issues related to a bank loan.
