Geely Car Owners Report Engine Problems Possibly Due to Fuel Quality

Geely is investigating reports of engine issues in some of its vehicles, potentially linked to poor fuel quality. A video circulating online shows a Geely Cityray emitting smoke from under the trunk, accompanied by sounds of engine distress. Some claim widespread engine failures are affecting Geely models such as the Cityray, Monjaro, and Boyue Pro, with drivers experiencing loss of control.

Geely officials acknowledge awareness of the issue but attribute it to isolated incidents, emphasizing the potential role of substandard fuel. The company is implementing software updates to enhance engine adaptability to fuel variations in Russia. While Monjaro owners can expect updates at official dealerships, Cityray and Boyue Pro, imported through parallel channels, may not be eligible for warranty repairs.

Experts support the fuel quality theory, suggesting that the engines may be “suffocating” due to poor gasoline. Dealers and technical specialists note that the problem might stem from unsuitable fuel, particularly in turbocharged engines requiring high octane levels. The “Avtopole” technical service department suggests that the video indicated valves burning out in the engine due to high temperature in the cylinder combustion chamber, which could be due to unsuitable fuel. “Rolf” company has not observed any surge in customer complaints about the “check engine” light in Geely cars.

Poor fuel quality can harm various engine components, including injectors, fuel pumps, and catalytic converters. Detonation phenomena can potentially damage the engine itself. Minor deviations from fuel standards are typically compensated by injection and ignition systems. However, significant deviations can lead to carbon deposits, material build-up, and power loss. Illegal activities might be a factor, and drivers should choose trusted gas stations to fuel up, Yuri Valko, head of the Union of Car Services of Russia, suggested.
