A lecture titled “Why is it Important to Study Everyday Life?” will be held on October 19th at the Malookhtinskaya Library, offering insights into the significance of studying our daily routines. The lecture is the first in the series “What We Remember: Cultural Memory in the Mirror of Everyday Life.”
The lecture aims to demonstrate that everyday life, while seemingly ordinary, holds the key to understanding societal structures, personality formation, and the workings of power, culture, and social norms. It emphasizes that what we perceive as “normal” is not natural but socially constructed, shaped by complex cultural and historical processes.
Anastasia Kalinina, a cultural scientist, researcher of the culture of everyday life, and master’s student at the St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture, will lead the lecture. She will analyze concepts such as “culture of everyday life,” “cultural identity,” and “cultural memory” to provide a fresh perspective on our familiar world.
The lecture will explore how scientists utilize the study of everyday life to reveal the ways in which society reproduces itself. Examples of how daily life has changed in the last decade, such as flexible work schedules and the shift to electronic books, will be discussed.
The event is free, open to individuals aged 16 and older, and will commence at 3:00 PM at the Malookhtinskaya Library located at Novocherkassky 49/20. Registration details are available on the library’s VKontakte page.
