The 11th edition of the “Skopje Cinema City” music documentary film festival commences tonight at 7 PM in the “Frosina” cinema within the Youth Cultural Center (MKC). This year’s festival spotlights the Netherlands.
The opening night will feature Anton Corbijn’s “Control,” a cult film by the renowned Dutch director and photographer.
Corbijn, celebrated for his portraits of global music icons and influential music videos, will receive a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to photography, music, and film.
“Control” (2007), a biographical drama, depicts the life of Ian Curtis, the lead singer of the influential post-punk band Joy Division.
Filmed in stark black and white, the movie delves into the themes of fame, isolation, and self-destruction, portraying Curtis as an icon of youthful rebellion and artistic fragility.
The festival lineup also includes the documentary “Bimhuis Blues,” which explores the history of the legendary Bimhuis jazz club in Amsterdam. It will be screened on October 29th and 30th.
Other featured works are the short animated film “Maternal Instincts” by Emma Zafirovska, and “Macedonian Diary in Rhymes,” a Vidi Vaka project focused on the local hip-hop scene.
On November 1st, a photography exhibition by Nenad Georgievski, titled “Geographies, Faces and Streets,” will open at 7 PM in Public Room. The exhibition aims to connect visual art with the urban and cultural landscapes through which music evolves.
“Skopje Cinema City 2025” receives support from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Macedonia and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The poster for the 11th edition was designed by Milica Kotceva.
