A person has been charged with extortion and endangering security after allegedly threatening the Mayor of Negotino and his family. The Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office of Kavadarci secured evidence leading to the charges.
The accused allegedly attempted to extort 3,000 euros from the Mayor of Negotino on September 2, threatening to attack the mayor and his family if the demand was not met. The mayor reported the incident to the police after refusing to comply with the extortion attempt.
Following the initial threat, the accused allegedly sent threatening messages to the mayor between September 4 and September 18. These messages, intended to intimidate and disturb the mayor, were also sent to the municipality’s official address, the Ministry of Interior, and journalists. The actions caused the mayor to fear for his safety and the safety of his family and the citizens of Negotino.
The public prosecutor has requested an extension of the accused’s detention, citing a risk of flight due to family residing abroad and the potential for repeating the crime. The accused has a prior conviction for coercion and stalking the same mayor, resulting in a suspended sentence. The prosecutor’s office will request the revocation of the suspended sentence since the probationary period has not yet passed and the accused is allegedly committing new crimes.
