A direct flight route connecting Skopje and Madrid has commenced, marking a new chapter in travel and exchange between North Macedonia and Spain. The inaugural flight was celebrated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski, Spanish Ambassador to North Macedonia Rafael Soriano Ortiz, and TAV Macedonia General Director Nejat Kurt.
The new Skopje-Madrid route is expected to significantly boost tourism and business opportunities for both countries. According to Deputy Prime Minister Nikoloski, this connection is vital for fostering cultural exchange and strengthening ties between the two nations.
Since the current government assumed office last year, 21 new destinations have been added to the flight network, reflecting a commitment to expanding air travel options. These include routes from Paris (Orly), Istanbul (to Ohrid), Dubai (starting this winter), Barcelona, Lyon, Amsterdam, and Ljubljana to Skopje. Additionally, charter flights from Freebird Airlines operate daily to Skopje, with plans to increase to twice daily. Flights to Ohrid have also been initiated from Basel, Larnaca, Madrid, Stuttgart, Bari and Stockholm.
Looking ahead, additional routes are planned to further enhance connectivity. These include Geneva, Cologne, Prague, Naples (Italy), Budapest (Hungary), Katowice, and Wrocław to Ohrid, as well as Milan to Ohrid.
Deputy Prime Minister Nikoloski expressed gratitude to TAV and the Spanish Ambassador for their collaboration. He also hinted at the potential for more destinations in Spain beyond Barcelona and Madrid in the future.
