Bozhinovska and Joksimović agree on faster construction of the North Macedonia-Serbia gas interconnector

North Macedonia and Serbia are prioritizing the accelerated construction of a gas interconnector, a project deemed strategically vital for regional energy security and diversified gas supplies. This agreement was reached during a working meeting between North Macedonia’s Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources, Sanja Bozhinovska, and Serbia’s Assistant Minister of Mining and Energy, Jovana Joksimović, at the 14th International Forum for Energy and Sustainable Development in Skopje.

Both officials emphasized the need to expedite the project to connect the gas systems of the two nations and gain access to new gas sources. Further discussions on coordinating institutions and operators from both countries took place at the Ministry of Energy of North Macedonia, focusing on streamlining procedures and technical steps.

Minister Bozhinovska stated that the gas interconnector is a crucial regional infrastructure project that will contribute to energy stability and security, benefiting not only North Macedonia and Serbia but also Europe as a whole. She highlighted that the connection would provide access to alternative sources and routes, strengthening the Balkans’ energy network and positioning North Macedonia as a responsible partner in Europe’s evolving energy landscape.

Assistant Minister Joksimović echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the interconnector aligns with the vision of an energy-connected, secure region that is aligned with European goals. She underscored the collaborative spirit between Serbia and North Macedonia, noting that their partnership demonstrates how joint strategies can lead to a stable and predictable energy future. She further emphasized the intensive and constructive cooperation with Minister Bozhinovska and her team, expressing confidence that coordinated action, with support from “Srbijagas” and “Nomagas”, will establish a new energy axis of stability between the two countries.
