Speed Skating Season Preview: Olympic Qualifying, World Cups, and Emerging Talent

The upcoming speed skating season promises a thrilling mix of high-stakes competitions, record attempts, and the emergence of new talent, all leading up to the Winter Games in Milan. The Dutch National Distance Championships (NK afstanden) in Heerenveen this weekend marks the start of a season filled with crucial events.

The primary focus of the NK afstanden is Olympic qualification, a notoriously competitive process. Skaters will be vying for spots in the first World Cup series, with international results throughout the season determining the number of Olympic spots each country secures. Even for a skating powerhouse like the Netherlands, achieving the maximum of nine athletes per gender is not guaranteed due to strict requirements and increasing international competition.

Following the NK afstanden, the World Cup circuit begins at the Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City, known for its high altitude and potentially record-breaking conditions. Subsequent World Cup competitions will be held in Calgary, Heerenveen, Hamar, and Inzell, with Inzell serving as the final test before the Olympic Games. The season will conclude in Heerenveen with the World Allround and Sprint Championships.

The previous season taught valuable lessons, including the fact that even dominant champions can be defeated. There is increased emphasis on maintaining composure, as the International Skating Union (ISU) has become stricter on athlete conduct.

Several skaters are showing strong form early in the season. Femke Kok has recorded impressive times, Jenning de Boo skated a fast 500 meters, and Joep Wennemars has been strong in the 1,000 meters.

Conversely, Patrick Roest is aiming to bounce back after a difficult previous season plagued by injuries and illness. Kai Verbij, a former world champion, returns to competition after a hiatus. Anna Boersma is an emerging talent who recently achieved a personal best in the 500 meters. Angel Daleman is fully focused on long track skating this season.

The National Distance Championships will take place from Friday to Sunday in Heerenveen, with various distances and events scheduled each day.
