Speed Skating Season Preview: Dutch National Championships, Olympic Qualification, and More

The speed skating season is set to begin with the Dutch National Distance Championships in Heerenveen this weekend. The event serves as crucial qualification for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan.

The competition, usually held between Christmas and New Year, is now focused on Olympic qualifying, considered a highly competitive event by skaters. Good results are essential for securing World Cup spots and maximizing the number of Olympic athletes a country can send.

Following the Dutch National Championships, the first World Cup competition will take place at the Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City, known for its record-breaking conditions due to thin air. Other World Cup locations include Calgary, Heerenveen, Hamar, and Inzell, with the season culminating in Heerenveen for the World Allround and Sprint Championships after the Olympics.

Last season, the international skating union ISU became stricter on norms and values, warning skaters to restrain anger to avoid disqualifications. The previous season also highlighted that even dominant skaters like Jordan Stolz can be beaten when not at their peak.

Femke Kok, known for her sprinting prowess, surprised many with her endurance, setting a track record in the 1,500 meters. Other skaters, like Jenning de Boo and Joep Wennemars, have also shown strong early-season form.

Patrick Roest, a decorated long-distance skater, is aiming to return to his previous form after struggling with health issues last season. Kai Verbij, a former champion, is making a comeback after a hiatus. Anna Boersma, a relatively unknown skater, has shown significant improvement in the 500 meters.

Angel Daleman, a former short tracker, is now fully focused on long track skating with Team Essent, aiming to make her mark in Milan. The Dutch National Distance Championships will take place over three days, featuring various distances and team events.
