D66 leader Rob Jetten has declared victory in the Dutch parliamentary elections, calling it a “historic result” and acknowledging the “great responsibility” that comes with it.
While the formal results are still pending, D66 currently leads the PVV (Party for Freedom) by approximately 15,000 votes.
The final outcome hinges on the results from Venray, where a partial recount is underway, and postal votes from abroad.
Historically, D66 performs well with postal voters.
News agency ANP has also concluded that D66 will likely emerge as the largest party.
Regardless of whether the PVV or D66 secures the most votes, the PVV is expected to be sidelined in the formation of a new government due to the exclusion of its leader, Geert Wilders, by other major parties.
The distinction lies in the fact that the largest party typically takes the initiative to appoint an explorer, which could potentially delay the process if the PVV were to hold that position.
Jetten addressed the press on Friday.
