Marco Borsato erupted in court, accusing the Public Prosecution Service and a journalist of unfair practices during his hearing for alleged indecent assault of a minor. The outburst came on the second day of the hearing in Utrecht, following pleas from both his lawyers and the prosecution.
Borsato alleges that the Public Prosecution Service withheld crucial evidence and that journalist John van den Heuvel unduly influenced the case against him. He specifically claimed that the prosecution refused to include “three binders” of material that would shed light on the girl’s home environment.
Borsato accused Van den Heuvel of turning the public against him for four years and of improperly coaching the girl in her report. He cited the deletion of parts of a report by a legal psychologist, Peter van Koppen, that suggested Van den Heuvel had “coached” the girl.
The singer’s defense team argued for his innocence and acquittal, claiming the accuser’s statements were inconsistent and unreliable. They suggested her 2021 report was not spontaneous but motivated by revenge from her mother, the former fan club chairman of Borsato.
The defense disputed the authenticity of a diary presented as evidence by the prosecution, suggesting texts may have been added later. They also challenged the interpretation of a secretly recorded conversation between Borsato and the girl’s mother, claiming a punctuation error altered the meaning of his words.
The judge is expected to deliver a verdict on December 4.
