International Support Pours in for Frans Timmermans at PES Congress Amidst Dutch Election Campaign

Frans Timmermans, leader of GroenLinks-PvdA, received an outpouring of international support at the Party of European Socialists (PES) congress in Amsterdam, as he campaigns for the upcoming Dutch elections. Prominent progressive figures from across Europe and beyond praised Timmermans’ leadership and expressed hope for his success in the Netherlands.

The PES congress, themed “time for progressive mobilization,” brought together leaders like Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, and Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Alexei Navalny, to offer their support and share strategies for success. The timing of the congress, shortly before the Dutch elections, provided Timmermans with a valuable opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and gain insights from their experiences.

During the congress, leaders emphasized the importance of understanding and addressing the concerns of everyday citizens. Ardern advised showing empathy and compassion, while Timmermans highlighted the need to develop policies that offer solutions to people’s worries. The leaders also collectively sang the resistance song Bella Ciao.

While Timmermans acknowledged that it remains to be seen whether the international praise will resonate with Dutch voters, he expressed appreciation for the support. Polls suggest a tightening race, with rivals from CDA and D66 gaining ground, making the outcome of the election uncertain.
