Argentinian Hockey Player Could Become First Gentleman of the Netherlands

Nicolás Keenan, the Argentinian fiancé of Dutch politician Rob Jetten, is garnering international attention as he could potentially become the Netherlands’ first “first gentleman” if Jetten succeeds in forming a government. Argentinian media outlets are particularly interested in Keenan’s background and his role as a potential figure in Dutch politics.

Keenan, 28, is a successful hockey player who was born in Buenos Aires but spent much of his youth in Spain and Italy due to his father’s hockey career. He has won two gold medals at the Pan American Games with the Argentinian national team and participated in the Olympic Games in Tokyo and Paris.

Keenan moved to The Hague in 2017 to play for HC Klein Zwitserland. He met Jetten in the summer of 2022 after Jetten had to temporarily relocate due to farmer protests. The two met at a local supermarket and quickly fell in love.

Their relationship became public after Jetten shared a photo of them on Instagram. Keenan subsequently became the first openly queer player in the Dutch men’s hockey top league. He has expressed gratitude for the positive response he has received from the hockey community.

In Argentina, where same-sex marriage was legalized in 2010, the relationship is also receiving significant attention. Keenan is seen as a role model for young LGBT athletes.

Keenan was featured on the cover of Argentinian glossy magazine Gente in June. The interview detailed Jetten’s proposal and Keenan’s feelings of liberation since embracing his bisexuality.
