Speed Skating Season Preview: Olympic Qualification, World Cups, and Rising Stars

The speed skating season promises excitement with Olympic qualification, World Cup events, and emerging talents. The Dutch National Distance Championships (NK afstanden) in Heerenveen kick off the season, focusing on World Cup qualification.

International results in the coming months will determine the number of Olympic spots for each country. The season includes World Cup competitions in Salt Lake City, Calgary, Heerenveen, Hamar, and Inzell, culminating in the Milan Olympics. The season concludes with the World Allround and Sprint Championships in Heerenveen.

Lessons from last season include the importance of controlling emotions and the fact that even dominant skaters like Jordan Stolz can be defeated. The International Skating Union (ISU) is enforcing stricter standards of conduct.

Femke Kok impressed in the preseason, setting a track record in the 1,500 meters. Jenning de Boo and Joep Wennemars also showed strong form. Patrick Roest is aiming to return to his peak after struggling with injuries last season.

Kai Verbij returns to competition after a break, while Anna Boersma has made significant progress. Angel Daleman is focusing on long track skating after transitioning from short track.

The NK Distances will be held from Friday to Sunday in Heerenveen, featuring various distances and events.
