Jetten Claims D66 Victory: ‘Historical Result’

D66 is poised to become the largest party in the House of Representatives, according to leader Rob Jetten, who hailed the preliminary results as a “historical result” carrying “great responsibility.”

While the final official results are still pending, including counts from Venray and postal votes from abroad, D66 currently holds a lead of approximately 15,000 votes over the PVV.

The outstanding postal votes from abroad are expected to heavily favor D66, a trend observed in previous elections. This suggests that D66’s position as the largest party is virtually secured.

Furthermore, D66 has a chance to gain a remaining seat, potentially increasing its lead over the PVV in terms of seats (27 to 26).

Despite the close race, the difference in vote count between PVV and D66 holds limited practical significance, as the PVV is expected to be excluded from the formation process due to widespread opposition to Wilders.

As the largest party, D66 is now expected to appoint an explorer next Tuesday, potentially accelerating the formation process. Previously, as the largest party, the PVV would have had the initiative to appoint an explorer, which could have slowed down the process.
