News on Expulsions in Danish Primary Schools, Skewed Property Valuations, and Recent Layoffs

Danish primary schools are facing a significant challenge with rising expulsion rates, with an average of 14 students expelled every school day in the first half of 2025. The majority of these expulsions are due to violence, including fights and physical altercations between students.

Sønderborg stands out as the municipality with the highest number of temporary expulsions, reporting 96 cases in the same period. This indicates a potentially serious issue within the local school system requiring further investigation.

Homeowners are expressing frustration and a sense of powerlessness regarding skewed property valuations, which are often based on complex artificial intelligence calculations. This lack of transparency makes it difficult for homeowners to verify the figures used to calculate their property taxes, leading to mistrust in the system and concerns about legal certainty. One example is Henrik Stobbe, whose terraced house is valued significantly higher than his neighbor’s identical property, despite his unsuccessful attempts to appeal the assessment.

The autumn season has also been marked by substantial layoffs across various sectors. Novo Nordisk is reducing its workforce by 5,000 employees in Denmark, while Ørsted anticipates laying off 500 employees before the year’s end. The public sector is also expected to experience significant job cuts.

Occupational psychologist Maike Glue, who has experienced layoffs herself, advises those affected to openly discuss their experiences and seek support during this challenging time. Her personal experience of shock, anger, and shame highlights the emotional toll that job loss can have on individuals.
