Odense is launching a program to provide free bus and light rail transportation within the city limits to vulnerable citizens starting December 1st. This initiative, a collaboration between Fynbus and Odense Municipality, aims to support a particularly vulnerable segment of the population.
The free pass program will be managed through selected social services, where employees and volunteers can apply for the pass on behalf of individuals facing significant social challenges. The concept for the free pass originated with ticket inspectors, who sought a way to avoid difficult situations involving fines that vulnerable individuals cannot afford.
The introduction of this program comes amid broader discussions about public transportation costs in various municipalities. In Copenhagen, leading candidates have proposed free public transport for specific groups of elderly and young people. Similarly, the mayor of Aarhus has suggested a general reduction in public transport fares within Aarhus.
